ABC NEWS Digital Media Fellowship Training in New York

ABC NEWSGeorgia Dawkins (National Association of Black Journalists), Huma Khan (Asian Association Journalism Association), Peter Martinez (National Association of Hispanic Journalists), and Paloma Veloz (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) were chosen for this summer's unprecedented digital media fellowship at ABC NEWS in New York.

In June, each student received training at the state-of-the-art ABC NEWS Bullpen. They learned the ABC NEWS workflow with programs like Avid iNews, Newscutter, and Media Manager. They also spent time training with Sony camcorders and non-linear editing video.

Peter Martinez thanks the Emma L. Bowen Foundation

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation for Minority Interests in Media has been preparing the future men and women of the broadcast industry since 1989.  In 2009, the Foundation will celebrate its 20th Anniversary.

Peter Martinez, 22, received an Emma Bowen Foundation three-year paid summer internship at KCET-TV Los Angeles -- the west coast flagship station of PBS.

The internship was sponsored in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Each summer, he learned from professional producers, reporters and cameraman at the show Life & Times.

As a Communications major from Cal State Fullerton, Martinez would like to thank the Emma Bowen Foundation for giving him such an incredible internship opportunity.

Peter Martinez takes on a three-month fellowship at ABC NEWS

ABC NEWS FULLERTON, CA -- Communications major Peter Martinez, Jr., is among several Cal State Fullerton students traveling this summer as part of their education.

The award-winning senior will spend three months at a paid fellowship with ABC News in New York. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and UNITY Journalists of Color Inc., sponsor the fellowship. As part of the fellowship, Martinez and three other fellows will attend the UNITY convention this summer in Chicago.

Martinez will rotate between three of ABC NEWS' digital properties: abcnews.com, World News with Charlie Gibson webcast, and ABC NEWS NOW -- the 24/7 digital channel on most cable systems around the country.

Just prior to the end of the spring semester, Martinez was one of four Cal State Fullerton students who won the 2008 FOX News Channel "College Challenge," a national video news competition open to undergraduates studying broadcast journalism. The team submitted a news package titled "SoCal Immigration: Law, Labor, Liberty," which won the team an all-expenses paid trip to New York to appear on an April FOX and Friends morning program, as well as a $20,000 prize — half of which was awarded to the team and the other half to the Communication’s Department for scholarships, grants and new equipment.

Peter Martinez on the CSUF Commencement JumboTron

Peter Martinez, Class of 2008FULLERTON -- Peter Martinez, 21, was one of the estimated ten-thousand students who took part in this year's commencement ceremony at California State University, Fullerton on Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18.

Martinez will be completed with his CSUF graduation requirements on August 8, 2008.  He received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism.

 Martinez now looks forward to summer 2008 because he was chosen for a three-month paid fellowship with ABC NEWS in New York City.  He’ll receive training in ABC’s state-of-the-art digital bullpen where he will rotate between three of ABC’s digital properties: abcnews.com , ABC NEWS NOW and the World News webcast with Charles Gibson.

CSUF Comm Students Appear LIVE on FOX & Friends

Friday, April 25, 2008 -- Four Cal State Fullerton students have returned from New York, having won the 2008 FOX News Channel's "College Challenge," a national video news competition open to undergraduates from universities across the country.

Carla Franco of Los Angeles, Sabrina Johnson of Vista, Peter Martinez of Long Beach and Robert Moran of Pomona produced "SoCal Immigration: Law, Labor, Liberty," a news video featuring an interview with James Gilchrist, co-founder of the Minuteman Project.

Here is the on-air video of the award-winning team:

"I just had a feeling that all the pieces were coming together, and I knew that our video would surpass the judging criteria," said Martinez. "This is such a big opportunity for us to showcase the future of broadcast journalism and make our professor proud, while putting Cal State Fullerton in the spotlight as it celebrates its 50th anniversary."

The top prize they garnered is a $20,000 cash award — half of which goes to the team and the other half to the Communications Department for scholarships, grants or new equipment.
